#VLD is a special kind of failure.

Hello! I wish to submit you to psychological torture. I see you have Voltron: Legendary Defender in your tags? Tell me, I know that the show is a trashfire from production and execution point, even the fandom, but what do you think the show could have been, if it weren't mishandled so badly? The themes, the characters, their relationships, etc. If you were to view its possibilites in the same way as LMK, what would your thoughts be? Just curious.
Drink water and eat vegetables regularly. Have a gentle month come to you.
Well, it could have been a lot of things, but it comes down to the fact that there was no ending, no goal we were working towards.
VLD is a special kind of bad, in the sense that they didn't have plans, and yet they forwent the obvious writing choices. We didn't have arcs or plot to fill our time with, but we still didn't write the Lion's as characters. No one in the main cast beside Shiro had an arc with their Lion.
That's crazy, isn't it? 8 seasons and we only focus on the Black Lion in s2. We never answer simple questions like, why clone Shiro? Why experiment on him? What was special about him/what were the Druid's plans? We have lore breaks like the paladins of Voltron going back only one generation.
Like, Voltron didn't need to be a masterpiece. It just needed to be fun, and it couldn't even do that.
It's so sad because s1 is good. Hunk's s1 arc about becoming a paladin of Voltron, and being given a reason to fight the Galra is one of the best in the show. We have themes of giving yourself up to a greater cause, of family, of hope. Like, we peak in s1 and go down from there. It's wild. By the end no one has unique dynamics or jokes. Why doesn't Allura become the black paladin. Why can't we do simple set-up and payoff. I don't know
I guess to go back to the original question: Voltron could have been anything. It could have been a simple story about war and colonization and hope. It could have even been good. Instead it was a story about how to not write a story, in a lot of ways

it’s the 4th anniversary of the premier of vld which of course means i have assembled a rough timeline for my descent into voltron special interest hell. it goes something like this:
- june 10 2016: vld season 1 premiers. i am none the wiser
- january 20 2017: season 2 comes out. this fact is irrelevant to me
- august 4 2017: season 3 happens. still not entirely sure what a “voltron” even is
- mid-august 2017: one of my friends cosplays keith. that’s cool. who’s keith?
- october 17 2017: season 4 arrives. that’s fine i guess
- march 2 2018: season 5 has entered the building. i am vaguely aware that i have known people who watched it at some point. the fandom is apparently “terrifying” but i survived homestuck, so i scoff at the concept and go on with my life
- june 15 2018: season 6 drops. i see a bunch of cool gifs and pretty fanart. coupled with the hype i have absorbed from the lead up to it, i wonder if i should give the show a watch
- june 16 2018: i start watching vld. two (four) episodes in and i love it. i can already tell i’m a hunk kinnie, and this brings me no end of joy
- june 28 2018: within two weeks, i have caught up entirely. i am thriving in the post-s6 hype
- july 20 2018: at sdcc, the Big Reveal happens. shiro is gay. he is a disabled main character of of colour in a wildly popular show for kids, and he is kind and brave and the pinnacle of masculinity, and he is gay. no matter your shipping opinions, this is incredible news and it’s hard to Not ride the high, so why bother trying? they show a trailer and announce the release date for season 7, and within hours a bunch of booted recordings of s7e1 are floating around online
- july 23 2018: my interest level has gotten to the point where i need to make a separate twitter for it, so i do. (fun fact: as of today, less than 2 years later, said twitter has over 7300 posts on it. my main, 4x that old, has ~30k)
- august 10 2018: season 7 is online at 1am my time. im selling at an artist alley all weekend, starting the following morning. i binge half the season anyway before passing out, and completely avoid the internet until i can watch the rest later that day
- october 5 2018: at nycc, the trailer for s8 and release date are revealed. i immediately book the announced day off work because i know i will want to watch the entire thing at once the second it’s out
- mid-october 2018: “leaks” of s8 start appearing online. pretty much no one in the fandom believes them, because no one Likes them. they seem ridiculous. people start making “leakverse” fanworks to feed some of the finale anticipation into, including me. no one really thinks they’re plausible at all
- december 14 2018: season 8 airs. i post a quick but heartfelt fanart before gearing up for 1am. it starts, and i cry. the first time they form voltron, i cry some more. things keep happening, and i keep getting tears on my screen, and i have to pause and start it over and over, but i live tweet the whole thing anyway. the leaks were... real. i come out of it unsure how i feel, exactly, but i am exhausted from the marathon and so immediately pass out
- the same day, after some sleep: im upset and confused as to why the finale season was so hollow. i see im not alone. it’s a rough week, feeling like something i love so deeply let me down so much. i realize it’s only been 6 months since i got into it - but, clinging to a deep sense of betrayal, i cry some more anyway
- the immediate aftermath: there are petitions and accusations of censorship and conspiracies about where the “real” s8 is. it’s hard not to get caught up in, or at least dragged down by, the lack of hype. no one who worked on the show says anything for days, weeks, months. fix it fanwork starts cropping up, and i surround myself in them. none of the excitement from before is there, not the same way it was. i start a new and highly ambitious piece of art out of spite. it’s left unfinished
- january 2 2019: lion forge releases the third volume of vld comics. no one really cares. i certainly don’t
- the intermediate aftermath: it becomes clearer by the day that the season was, simply put, a failure and a flop. no one liked it. kids cried over it and parents had no idea how to explain it to them. the fandom and community dim for a while, but i keep immersing myself in the trove of fanwork that already existed, and i start trying again to make some of my own
- may 29 2019: lion forge comics announces that they are not renewing their license to make more vld comics. that, coupled with the abysmally rated final season, seems to be the nail in the coffin for this iteration of the ip. there won’t be anything else official for vld. somehow, this sparks a renewed interest in me. despite everything, im more dedicated than ever before to preserve and proliferate my good experiences. i know this won’t be a blip in my history as a fan, so i’m determined to be happy with it, as best i can be
- the rest: is, as they say, history. as of now, i have something like 20 fanworks of my own in progress for vld. my ao3 bookmarks number in the 100s, and my to-read list is at over 250. ive made a concerted effort to be more active and engaged in the fandom, because it came so close to fizzling out, for me and maybe for everyone, but it’s brought me so much goodness that i cant and Won’t let that happen, not without a fight
it’s been just under 2 years since i decided to watch voltron on a whim. and it has honestly become a central part of my interests and identity in that time - but for the majority of it, it’s been because of fandom and fanworks, and that’s maybe what made it stick so well to begin with: the creative, varied, amazing parts of it that no network mandate could have offered on its own
this started as a way to catalog my journey into and through vld but honestly it kind of became a love letter to the fandom (at least, my corner of it). that’s what’s made these last years so special - what’s made them simultaneously fly by and feel like a solid constant. a dedicated, talented fan base who are capable of so much more than the constraints of the source material
it’s amazing to look back on, and incredible to keep looking forward to. we’ve all been told - “go, be great”
we have been, and continue to be. like the stars, and like my love for vld, it’s inevitable
so thank you all for the years of “great”. 🖤

Hey, I was wondering if you had any posts talking about how the VLD Paladins compare in personality to their DotU counterparts. I want to write some universe hopping fic and want to get them right.
Not yet, though it’s something I’ve wanted to do. I can give you a basic rundown for the time being.
Hunk: Didn’t have VLD Hunk’s nervousness or skills at diplomacy. Scared of heights, however. Brawn of the team. Hot tempered, with it usually flaring at the sight of injustice. However, he would occasionally lose his temper at his teammates (Lance and Pidge had to hold him back from going after Keith in “A Pretty Spy” for example), though it was usually quick to cool in this case. Had an especially close bond with Pidge who referred to as his Little Buddy. Had a special place in his heart for children. Loved food but not a cook.
Pidge: Mischievous and playful. More outgoing than VLD Pidge. While extremely intelligent, he rarely spouted techno jargon. Temperamental. Enjoys nature and has an affinity for animals. He was the only one besides Allura who could understand what the Space Mice were saying. Is especially sensitive towards the plight of orphans, being one himself. Good at cooking.
Allura: More naive and sensitive than VLD Allura. The girl was WAY too trusting at times. I’d say she was probably more forgiving too; she tried to redeem Haggar, of all people. Like VLD Allura, she’s extremely compassionate, wishes to do whatever she can to protect others, and has a playful streak. Knows 50(!) languages.
Keith: Idealistic and prone to giving cheesy speeches about teamwork and goodness. I’d say he’s more level headed and less temperamental than VLD Keith. Was Lotor’s foil but never became fixated on him the way VLD Keith did. Contrary to popular belief he wasn’t some kind of robot emotionally; he cared deeply about his teammates, did occasionally lose his temper and had the odd outbursts of emotions. However, he doesn’t struggle with VLD Keith identity issues or fear of abandonment, so he’s generally quicker to trust and doesn’t build up walls the way VLD Keith does. Still, he can be shy about showing his feelings, especially his affection for Allura. Had a better relationship with Lance. The two are good friends.
Lance: Prideful. Confident. Hotheaded, with his antics sometimes putting himself in danger (RARELY is own teammates). Has a sixth sense that allows him to sense bad vibes coming from someone and can be very distrustful of strangers as a result. While he sometimes questions Keith’s orders, they are good friends. Wry sense of humor. Seems to be second in command after Keith. Don’t recall him expressing VLD Lance’s insecurities about his place on the team.
Sven/Shiro: We don’t learn much about him in the first six episodes, but he seemed very reserved and quiet. Was badly injured protecting Lance from Haggar and had to sent away for medical treatment. Struggled with feelings of failure, depression, and had given up on himself prior to meeting Romelle.
Hope that helps. I’d like to do more detailed comparisons sometime in the future.

VLD Headcanons & Timeline
Mostly for my own use when creating content. The time frame explanation is pretty much just me agreeing with this post  and moulding it to how I see things.
I’ll likely update this as things come to mind, there’s a lot I’ve left out while I go over how it could fit into canon
The Garrison
The garrison is part military part space program, that seems to recruit at young ages (high school level students grades 10-12, as opposed to college aged students like current military regulations permit). Getting the best of the world’s youth, it acts as a kind of military school. The cadets seem to come from all over the world.
Where is this institution located?
I think I’m the only person in the fandom who whole-heartedly does not believe the garrison is located in the USA.
The map in Keith’s shack looks similar to the coast of north Africa, the area in which Keith’s marked as the high energy spot looks to be around Libya/Egypt, further, one of the cave painting depicts the blue lion running with gazelles
~More under the cut~
Timeline (to be edited)
November 2113 - Kerberos mission estimated launch
February 2114 - Kerberos mission loss estimated – (estimated 3 months journey between Earth and Kerberos (Pidge: “it takes our ships months to reach this far! We got here in seconds!”) (Shiro was said to be missing in space for 12 months, assuming he returned in the February of 2115 in accordance with the calendar in Keith’s shack, the Kerberos mission failure likely happened in the February of 2114. Lance logs the rescue mission simulation arrival as May 11 2114, So I can assume from that it takes about 3 months to get there from Earth)
June 2114 - Keith estimated termination from the Garrison. Assuming he’s waited until a possible rescue mission occurred, and being given little to no info about what happened to Shiro, giving Keith four months to let his temper fester, and for something big to occur to get him kicked out.
Between June 2114 – February 2115   Keith refuses to re-join civilization, begins hunting the blue lion’s energy in the desert
September 2114 - Lance reassigned to the fighter pilot class, Katie infiltrates the garrison as Pidge. The garrison trio is formed
February 2115 - Estimated time for Shiro’s return to Earth
Character ages:
Completely speculation, there’s really little proof in why I think they’re the ages they are, but whatever, this works for me.
Shiro: February 29 - 2096 (if 19 yrs.) 2092 (if 23 yrs.) 2088 (if 27 yrs.) Taking into account that Shiro is a leap day baby, him being 25 does not work, if the year Lance stated in episode 1 is correct. I’m personally going with 23.
Matt: 2095 (estimated to be 19-20 the year of canon, due to Matt wearing a garrison cadet uniform in flashback, I’m guessing he was likely in his final year, and probably around 18 at the time of The Kerberos mission launch)
Hunk: January 13 2097 (Aged 18 during canon)
Lance: July 28 2097 (Aged 17 during canon)
Keith: (between June-December) 2098 (aged 16 during canon) (I headcanon Keith as being a year younger than Hunk and Lance, being that he was considered a prodigy, he likely got moved up, which might explain Lance’s dislike of him, especially if the only reason Lance didn’t make fighter class was because some brat who was likely getting special treatment, i.e. Shiro, that stole his spot.)
Pidge: April 3 2100 (aged 14 during canon, on the edge of 15)
Allura: 18 - 20 (I have no real concept of how Altean years and biological development work, judging from some things said here and there, it would seem they live a longer than average humans do, So this is less of a definitive “this is how old they are!”, and more of a probable biological equivalent to humans)
Coran: In his 50’s (I have no real concept of how Altean years and biological development work, judging from some things said here and there, it would seem they live a longer than average humans do, So this is less of a definitive “this is how old they are!” and more of a probable biological equivalent to humans)

I was tagged by @fryferbfringefan44. Now, I have to post 10 characters from 10 fandoms. I’m gonna take some liberties here and bend the rules by not necessarily picking top faves, but faves nonetheless and characters I want to talk about that I don’t really get to in other memes. Be ready, I’m gonna use this to let off some steam. :V
1. Isabella Garcia-Shapiro (Phineas and Ferb): I can’t help but feel controversial here because while I’d hardly call her unpopular, I always get the feeling that most people either don’t care about her much or that the main reason they like her is because they ship her with Phineas (or Ferb, or some other character even). Meanwhile I’m sitting here cringing at my old Phinabella days, and am in that odd sliver that seems to really like her but don’t really focus too much on the Phineas aspect, even if I still have some dreaded Phinabella inside me I’m trying to suppress? I mean, I didn’t even realise she had a crush on Phineas until a year after I discovered the show (yep, I didn’t see crush episodes like how Linda never sees Phineas and Ferb’s inventions). So anyway, I just think she’s really damn cool. She’s hypercompetent like the rest of her peers, she cares about things that matter (in particular the Fireside Girls) as well as her friends, she’s not afraid to speak her mind (well, besides one thing), plus she’s funny, cute and while probably being the most “normal” out of Phineas and Ferb’s group of friends can still have her moments of quirkiness (just watch Return Policy or Face Your Fear, lol). I also find some of her flaws quite interesting, like a lot of her friends we actually see she cares enough about the Fireside Girls to the point where it has given her anxiety over potential failure, and sometimes she has a need for attention (I really like the episode where she’s competing with Candace over attention for Melissa the young Fireside Girl because of this). Granted her central character arc still revolves around Phineas and I understand why some don’t really care for that, but admittedly I like that kind of stuff too (in b4 “problematic fave” comments from people). On one hand I feel like we focused only on her crush at specific times and not nearly as much as some people make it out to be, but on the other hand her crush on Phineas is just super adorable? I think it might actually be because I kind of relate to her (I often remind myself of her at times admittedly, even if there’s other characters I’m more like XD), like there’s loads of characters that exist as love interests but Isabella actually managed to engage me probably because we actually followed her and her feelings instead of her just being some random girl for Phineas to try and impress (I guess I’m saying she was at least active in her own romance storyline, before then I had only really seen boys chasing after girls)? IDK if I’m making sense, but I guess I’m saying even if I think she’s able to stand on her own with her other attributes and is admirable in that regard I can’t help but really relate to the crush stuff too, which is maybe why I like her more than some people (and again, still not in the super shippy wants-her-to-be-with-Phineas-at-all-costs way). But yeah, as you can see I think Isabella is awesome and she’ll always have a special spot as a fave.
2. Jasper (Steven Universe): I choose Jasper because I feel like some people are being somewhat unfair on her? Like, I feel like some people are underestimating how complex she is and that she’s not going to be the “true villain.” Steven Universe never works that way, not even with characters like the Diamonds, you can even ask the writers and they’ll say they don’t do actual villains. Plus, lots of people have gone “true villain” on characters like Peridot when she first appeared, and now look at where she is! Anyway, Jasper’s story is honestly really gripping and also quite tragic. Sure, she works as a great antagonist against the Crystal Gems, but when we piece together where she came from we really get to see why she is the way she is, and she’s actually quite sympathetic. I mean, in her last appearance in Earthlings, I was on the verge of tears. She’s not just some thug, she has things she cares about and has experienced real hurt, and has become quite messed up as a result. Oh, and I can’t wait for her to come back. She’s gotta be back eventually.
3. CT-5555, aka “Fives” (Star Wars): I always enjoyed the clone troopers, but one of my favourites was always Fives. I was always invested in the Domino Squad storyline, and how they rose through the ranks and eventually became ARC Troopers. However, when things got really interesting for me was the Umbara story arc. Here, we not only saw Fives’ capabilities as a soldier, but with Pong Krell taking control of the 501st Legion he actually started to show more colours to his personality. In particular, we got to see that he cared more about what he thought was right than simply following orders without question. Unfortunately, even if that saved him and his fellow clones on Umbara, it would doom him when he learned about Order 66. Fives may have done the right thing, but when the entire Republic is against you for trying to reveal what they perceive as some conspiracy theory, you’re not going to go out well (especially if you have the Sith involved). I just really liked seeing a clone grow rebellious and then renegade but still cared about his duty because it’s either all loyalty or fuck the army, it was a nice balance. It was just committing the crime of asking questions that doomed him (and gosh his death is so sad). At least Rex seemed to listen to his warning though. :’)
4. Bradley Nicholson (Milo Murphy’s Law): IDK if I’ve talked about Bradley much, but he’s just such a blast to watch. Of course there’s the added bonus of Vincent Martella voicing a character radically different from Phineas, but even then he’s just really funny, the voice acting just enhances that. He’s also quite interesting, given that he’s jealous of Milo and the attention he gets, plus he seems kind of lonely. I really want to see him interact with Milo in the future and see whether he changes his opinion on him, or if he somehow grows even more envious while he grows on the others.
5. Makuta Teridax (Bionicle): Yeah, Teridax here is a pretty standard villain with standard villain traits. Selfish, arrogant, wants power, views his subordinates as nothing but tools, associated with darkness, etc. The reason he has left a mark on me is because he’s not only good at what he does, he’s epic at it. They could’ve just had him be some typical dark lord type, but he ended up developing into a character that is able to plan things out to a ridiculous extent. As a result, he would always find ways to be steps ahead of the heroes, and he would even go as far as letting himself be severely defeated and letting them win if it meant achieving his ultimate endgame. Everyone was being played like a puppet, he was powerful but his manipulation and planning is what made him so competent. Oh yeah, and he ended up winning. It literally took a moon to the head to finally take him down, but even then he had already unleashed so much terror on the world that was now his.
6. Keith (Voltron: Legendary Defender): I’m pretty new to VLD so I might not really be as in-depth here now, but Keith is definitely one of my favourite characters in the show. For starters, he’s just really badass. Seriously, he might be reckless at times, but at least he’s not to the point of being foolish, he’s really good at what he does. Also the whole storyline with him being Galra was really interesting, The Blade of Marmora is probably one of my favourite episodes of the show so far. I was already invested in his need for answers, but there he was willing to go to dangerous lengths to get what he wanted. At least the hell he went through was worth it.
7. Alister Azimuth (Ratchet and Clank): Most of the final bosses in Ratchet and Clank games are villains, but here it was literally the mentor character for Ratchet. Granted I’ve never been too savvy with video games, but this twist here when I first saw A Crack in Time blew me away. He’s one of the last of his entire species and has lost everyone who was ever close to him, but when he sees the chance to go back in time, he can’t help but take it. Problem is that he will rip apart time if he actually tries that. It’s actually really dramatic to fight him at the end because throughout the entire game Azimuth had been helping out Ratchet despite stuff from his past slipping into the open (oh yeah, he also feels personally responsible for unwitting helping the one to get rid of the Lombaxes), but when Ratchet and Clank tell him using The Great Clock to alter time would be dangerous, he decides to stop playing nice. He’s rough throughout the entire game, but now he’s not taking anything from anyone. He needed to go back and undo the mistakes of the past, but he had to end up fighting someone who is the son of his once best friend to do it. Granted he’s brought to his senses by the end, but he does end up dying to reverse the time travel process.
8. Connor Temple (Primeval): I don’t remember much of Primeval, but I always liked Connor. Sure, a lot of the time he was there to be goofy and provide comic relief, but he was also really intelligent and knew his stuff. It’s also cool seeing him grow more important with each series, even if in the end his technological skills almost fuck up the Earth since he was being played by the antagonists. Just a fun and cool character.
9. Max Jerry Horowitz (Mary and Max): Mary and Max isn’t a film for the faint of heart (...like me), but Max has always meant a lot to me. He was the first time I had ever seen an Autistic character that felt real, and not just some stereotype or gag. We get to know him and all of the stuff he’s been through, and you can’t help but feel for the guy. He also wasn’t afraid to be himself despite how much hell the world put him through, which is really great to see. Also yay for a character that actually supports neurodiversity in some shape or form!
10. Donna Noble (Doctor Who): Donna was the first companion I got to know on Doctor Who, and she’s still my favourite. I enjoyed seeing someone with a relationship with the Doctor that was platonic but still strong and obviously meant as much as any other kind of relationship, and she was a lot of fun. I understand some found her annoying at first, but if she didn’t start there she wouldn’t have had such great character growth, learning to grow more confident in herself and overcome her insecurities. She was really funny as well, not to mention unafraid to speak up about things. The way she left the show was absolutely heartbreaking though...
I’m not tagging anyone, but if you’re reading this an interested feel free to do this.

INTERESTING Thanks for enduring this! Also for replying :)
